AGR battle intensifies: Vodafone Idea moves Supreme Court to counter DoT's demand of ₹2,774 crore

Vodafone Idea Challenges DoT's AGR Dues in Supreme Court
New Delhi: Vodafone Idea (VI) has filed a fresh writ petition in the Supreme Court, seeking to challenge the Department of Telecommunications’ (DoT) revised calculation of its adjusted gross revenue (AGR) dues, as reported by CNBC-TV18.
In its plea, the company has requested the apex court to quash the DoT’s new tax demand of Rs 2,774 crore, arguing that this amount exceeds the scope of the Supreme Court’s earlier ruling on AGR liabilities. VI claims that certain amounts have been counted twice and require reconciliation to ensure accuracy.
Recently, the DoT raised an additional AGR demand for FY17 while also revising the outstanding licence fee for FY19. The new claim of Rs 2,774 crore compounds the earlier demand of Rs 5,960 crore, further intensifying the pressure on the already debt-laden telecom operator.
Additionally, Vodafone Idea has asked for a comprehensive recalculation of its dues for periods preceding FY17, as stated in the report.
